The Timing Belt: The One Service You Never Skip

Of all the maintenance on an import, the timing belt is the one we wish more owners knew about before it was too late. It is not glamorous, you will never feel it working, and skipping it can turn a running car into a paperweight.

Why it matters so much

Most import engines are interference designs. That means the valves and pistons share the same space at different moments, kept perfectly in sync by the timing belt or chain. If that belt snaps while the engine is running, the pistons hit the valves and the damage is immediate. You are no longer looking at a belt; you are looking at an engine.

Replace it on schedule, not on luck

Your car has a recommended interval for the timing belt, and it is there for a reason. When we replace a belt, we also replace the tensioners, idlers, and usually the water pump that share the job, because they wear on the same clock. Setting the timing marks correctly is precise work, and getting it right is the whole point.

Buying a used import?

If you are looking at a high-mileage import, ask when the timing belt was last done. If nobody can answer, factor it into the price. Better yet, have us inspect it first so you know exactly what you are buying.
